Why does a dough if flour starts producing foul smell after some days when left in open?

when dough is left open for a few days it starts producing foul smell. this is because dough is exposed to the atmosphere and the conditions are made suitable for the growth of different kinds of bacteria. sometimes yeast also develops over it resulting in foul smell
