gases, solids and liquids are alll made up of atoms. the difference between them is the space between all the atoms. gases have more space between the atoms present in them. so when they are compressed these atoms move closer to each other and occupy the space.
solids on the other hand have almost zero space available due to which they don't get compressed.
liquids fall in between. they have moderate amount of space not as high as gas and not as low as solids so they can partially compressed.
