Answer:

While catching a fast moving cricket ball, a fielder in the ground gradually pulls his hand backward because by doing this, he increases the time in which the velocity of ball will become zero. Thus, the rate of change of momentum will be large and less force will be exerted by the ball on the hand of the fielder.

This process is mainly done because of inertia.

When the ball comes to the fielder, it has a very high speed, which leads to the situation of inertial of motion. If the fielder catches the ball and stops suddenly, the ball will apply a lot of force on his hand which might lead to hand injuries. That's why, instead of stopping the ball suddenly, the fielder keeps drawing his hand behind, due to which, he is able to stop the ball easily and no severe injury is caused.
