to reduce the force on his hand . As the time increases the force gets reduced and the player is not hurted.

when a fielder catches the ball, the ball comes to rest in very short time period i.e., there is a large change in momentum, and we know that rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to force applied, i.e., more time it will take to catch the ball, less change in momentum so less force of impact is there. so, fielder pulls his hand back to catch the ball .
