Why does a lump of cotton wool shrink in water

A lump of cotton wool shrinks when immersed in water. This is because air present in the cotton wool escapes. Thus, the volume of the cotton wool decreases.

a lump of wool shrinks in water because of the air present between the gaps of cotton, and the volume of decrease. when the air present in cotton escapes it's volume decrease and thus lump of cotton shrinks in water.
