Why does a magnetic compass always align along the north-south direction

because earth is also similar to a large magnet with North and South Pole.

And we know that opposite attract, so the compass being a magnet always point North and South direction

Because earth also behaves as a magnet with polarity south to north. compass north is the geographical south and south is the geographically north
