why does a matchstick start burning on rubbing it on the side of a Matchbox

because it gives it ignition temperature

the tip of matchsticks is made up of phosphorus.. and the friction due to rubbing the phosphorus tip of matchsticks on the side of matchbox increases the temperature , so that it gets ignited....
