Contrary to common rumor, Viruses are able to exist outside the host. That is how they spread from one host to another. However, they do need to be inside a host cell to replicate. Viral genomes cannot encode all the proteins and RNAs, such as transfer RNAs, ribosomal RNAs, and ribosomal proteins, required for replication. Some obligate intracellular parasite bacteria are also lacking in the ability to replicate outside of a host cell, so the boundary between what is a virus and what is a bacteria can be a bit fuzzy however the membrane of a virus fuses with the host cell membrane, so viral proteins mix directly with host cell proteins in the host cell cytoplasm.
