why does a piece of paper appear white in sunlight ?How would you expect it to appear when viewed in red light?

It looks red, if there is enough white light in the room to give the appropriate color contrast. However, if the only light in the room is red, then things get interesting. Your brain tries to “recalibrate” itself so that it can see the colors of things despite the odd lighting.
