the sprinter when in a sprint builds up a velocity which is experienced by all parts of the body . so after crossing the line ... the sprinter if tries to stop abruptly he will fall. this is bcoz all parts of his body even after acceleration has gone is in the inertia of speed .. so when if he tries to stop his legs .. his upper part of the body will be in inertia which will cause him to fall.
therefore the srpinter runs even after crossing line slowly coming to a stop so that the inertia of motion converts to intertia of rest slowly.
