Why does a swimmer push the water backwards? ​

According to Newton's third law, forces always come in equal and opposite pairs. The swimmer will drag their hand backwards to the water to apply a force to it, this causes some of the water to accelerate backwards, but it also causes an equal and opposite force on you.
