Acetic acid is CH3CO2H, giving a molecular formula of C2H4O2 and an empirical formula of CH2O. Sucrose and glucose both have a molecular formula of C6H12O6 giving the same empirical formula of CH2O. However, oxalic acid is HOOCCOOH, with a molecular formula of C2H2O4 and an empirical formula of CHO2 while formic acid is HCO2H or CH2O2.
