why does an athlete breath faster and deeper than usual after finising the race

as we usually breathe our respiratory system works at a fixed rate. but in races athlete wants more energy so it breathes fast to get more oxygen and to fasten the process of respiration to make more energy rapidly

For our normal activities we don't need much energy, so a normal speed of breathing is enough. But while running we need a lot of energy for making enough energy for the race we need more oxygen and for more oxygen we breathe faster and deeper than usual. And after race also for few minutes we breathe faster to retain our energy. Hope this helps:-)
