Why does an athlete breathes faster and deeper than usual after finishing the race?

When an athlete run, he need extra energy and for this reason muscles require extra supply of glucose and oxygen. In this context rate of respiration and heart rate increases ,as a result blood circulation in muscles increase causing supply of glucose and oxygen in muscle

For this reason an athlete breathes faster and deeper than usual after finishing the race
