In hypotonic solutions, animal cells swell up and explode as they cannot become turgid because there is no cell wall to prevent the cell from bursting.A single animal cell ( like a red blood cell) placed in a hypotonic solution will fill up with water and then burst.

When placed in hypotonic solution , the cell has less water concentration as compared to the surrounding medium . so it the water moves from the outer medium to the cell through the process of osmosis due to which the cell bursts as it doesnt have a turgid cell wall like plant cells.
