why does bassanio need 3000 ducats in the merchant of venice

Bassanio loves Portia a lot.He has decided to go to belmont to try his luck in the choice of caskets . To look as a worthy suitor to portia he asks 3000 ducats to antonio, but he does not have it so he takes a loan from shylock............

He needs 3000 ducats to go and suit Portia and get married to her.
And to spend while he is travelling.
