Bassanio was able to choose the right casket simply because he had the wisdom of interpreting the inscriptions on the three caskets. He was not led by appearance. He rejected the golden and the silver caskets inspite of their showy appearances. He was prepared to risk everything for the sake of love.

The reason that Bassanio selects this casket over the gold one and the silver one is because he thinks that you cannot judge a book by its cover, essentially. He thinks that, these days, people are too concerned with appearances. They think that what looks good really is good.

The Prince of Arragon rejects the lead casket because : He rejects the golden casket because : It was inscribed on the golden casket that he will get what many men desire, but the Prince of Arragon did not want to be the one out of many , simply saying, he did not want to be a commoner .
