Bleaching powder smelled strongly of chlorine because it reacts with CO^2 from the atmosphere to produce chlorine & calcium carbonate. ... Bleaching powder is actually a mixture of calcium chloride, calcium hydroxide and calcium hypochlorite. Hence it is not a single salt.

Hence, bleaching powder smell strongly of chlorine. ... Bleaching powder does not dissolve completely in water because bleaching powder is actually a quite complex molecule. It contains various other heavy calcium salts in it like calcium chloride, calcium hydroxide and calcium hypochlorite.
