Carbon forms large no. of compounds as it has the following 3 properties,
1. It has a valency of 4 so can make bonds with large no. of atoms.
2. It has a small nucleus as it has only 6 protons and 6 neutrons and hence attract more electrons easily.
3. And last is the most important property of carbon that is catenation which means it has the capability to form large no. of bonds.

The tendency of an element to form chains of identical atoms is called catenation.
This tendency is observed in the case of non-metals that are bonded covalently.
However, this property is maximum in carbon as it can combine with other carbon atoms by single, double or triple covalent bonds.
It can bond to form long open chain or branched chains or closed ones. Catenation property depends upon the value of bond energy which is maximum in the case of carbon.
