Leguminous plants fix the atmospheric nitrogen with the help of Rhizobium bacteria present in the root nodules of these plants. The nitrogen fixed gets into the soil and make it fertile. Leguminous plants utilise some of the nitrogen compounds, leaving behind the rest to enrich the soil. So farmers do not add nitrogenous fertilisers to soil in which leguminous plants are grown.
