Why does force of friction called contact force?

It is the force that opposes relative motion or tendency of relative motion between two surfaces in contact represented by f. ... Because of this friction force is calleda self adjusting force. Earlier, it was believed that friction was caused due to the roughness of the two surfaces in contact with each other.
