why does friction occur when two surfaces are in contact

Friction takes place because of the grooves and ridges present in any surface, as no surface is completely smooth...
In hypothetical experiments, where completely smooth surfaces are present, there is no question of friction...Such as Newton's first law of[Galileo's Law of Inertia], and Einstein's theory of special relativity...
