why does gas exchange only happens in the alveoli, and not along the length of the bronchi and bronchioles

Exchange of gas is possible in alveoli due to :-

1. They have a very thin wall which is only one molecule thick which allows the gases to diffuse easily.

2. They provide a large surface area for gaseous exchange.

3. Due to presence of a dense capillary network the transportation and pick up of oxygen becomes convenient.

Due to these features of alveoli, gaseous exchange becomes possible in it and not in bronchi or bronchioles.
