Why does Gilchrist decide to not take the exam?​

Since Gilchrist was not well prepared he was nervous and assumed that it would be a better idea to skip his examination. He became very demotivated regarding his studies. Regardless of all his efforts to muster up the courage, he was not able to over come his fears.
