Mahmoud Abbas, also called Abu Mazen, (born 1935, Safed, Palestine [now in Israel]), Palestinian politician who served briefly as prime minister of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in 2003 and was elected its president in 2005 following the death of Yasser Arafat. He was an early member of the Fatah movement and was instrumental in building networks and contacts that simultaneously laid the foundations for peace with Israel and for Palestinian self-determination through a two-state solution.
