The Marshal did not wanted Mr. Easton's friend, Miss Fairchild to be ashamed of what his friend had did.

So he told Miss Fairchild that Mr. Easton is taking him (Marshal) to Leavenworth prison.

This also indicates that a person can be glum faced by countenance but can be soft hearted by mind.
