why does ice float on water

shruthi12: because the density of ice is lesser than that of water as water contracts on cooling
subhashri: The molecules present in ice are arranged in cage like structure . So it has more intermolecular space than water. This makes it lighter(causes it to have less density). So ice floats on water.

Objects float in denser mediums
Density of ice < density of water
So ice floats in water
