There are many reasons for the population explosion in India.
Illiteracy and lack of awareness as far as the lower class is concerned. They think that having a bigger family would mean more working hands in the family. With many people living below poverty line, increased inflation has made living unbearable for many people. So the only respite they find is having all members of the family indulge in trades or manual labor.Traditional culture of having a big family is still considered good in India.Social ills like child marriage.Lack of sex education in schools.Poor access to contraceptives and early marriages resulting in early pregnancies, particularly in the rural areas.About 18 million people continued to be added every year in India because more than 50% of its population is in the reproductive age. This large base of young people imparts momentum population growth. The high birth rates of the previous decades have added large number of people in the reproductive age group. According to population projections by the Registrar General of India, about 60% growth is due to momentum alone.
