A sinking level of ships in the water is mainly due to the physical characteristics of a particular water body. A higher density of water results in lower sinking level of the ship. Marine water is known to be denser than freshwater. This is because of the presence of salt in the marine water.

So, therefore, ships sink deeper in the freshwater than marine water.

Additional Information :)

What is marine water?

One of the largest water bodies on Earth is the Marine. They have a high salt content. For example: Sea or ocean.

What is freshwater?

Any water except the seawater, ocean water or brackish water is known as the freshwater. For example: Icebergs, ponds, river, lake, etc.

The density of fresh water is less than marine water due to the buoyant force on the ship that floats on marine water and is greater than the fresh water. For this reason, the ship dips to a larger depth in fresh water as compared to marine water.

What is buoyant force ?

  • Buoyant force is a force acting on an object opposite to gravity by fluid which is being submerged partially or comletely in fluid.
  • It opposes weight of object.
  • Buoyant force is given by volume displaced by object into density of fluid into gravitational acceleration.

What is fresh water ?

  • Fresh water is any naturally occurring water except seawater and brackish water.
  • Fresh water is generally characterized by having low concentrations of dissolved salts and other total dissolved solids.

What is marine water ?

  • By “marine,” we mean of, or produced by, the sea or ocean.
  • The term encompasses the salty waters of the Earth, and is also known simply as a salt water ecosystem.
  • As over 70% of Earth's surface is covered in water, and 97% of that water is salt water, marine ecosystems are the largest types of ecosystems on the planet.
