Why does Johnsy command Sue to open the green shades? Why are they both taken by surprise?​

johnsy commanded Sue to open the green shades so that she can see if the last leaf of tree has fallen or not but when the opened the shades ,they were surprised by seeing that the leaf was still hanging on the ivy creeper tree.
