Maddie never had the courage to stand up to Peggy, as she was afraid that she would be bullied next. Maddie was not rich and pretty like Peggy, she was rather poor and herself wore hand-me-down clothes, like Wanda Petronski. Yes, Maddie considered Peggy's friendship important as she was one of the popular and pretty girls of room thirteen. The lines which tell us this are "...Peggy, who had thought of this game and Maddie, her inseparable friend" (Pg 66)
