Food does not enters the wind pipe because of the epiglottis.

It is present at the starting of the wind pipe. So, when we swallow our chewed food, the epiglottis blocks the wind pipe and the food enters to our food pipe.

That's why you will notice that during swallowing food, you can't breath or intake air.
