Why does our government frequently advertise the necessity of consuming iodised salt?

Iodized salt means a salt that contains some or a very little amount of iodine in it. The government advertises and promotes its use because iodine is required in our body but the body cannot synthesize it on its own. So, it has to be obtained from outside. Food that contains iodine is the egg, tuna, shrimp, etc which are not available at all times or can not be consumed by all. But almost everyone has to consume salt either in normal quantities or in lesser quantities and is available to all. It is an all-round item that can be consumed by every person irrespective of any reason. So, it is the ideal item to deliver the body with iodine.

Requirements of iodine;

1. It is used by the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone.

2. It is required for brain development in infants as well as growing children.

3. Lack of iodine causes thyroid gland disorder causing swelling in the neck called "goiter".

4. Lack of iodine causes developmental disabilities.
