Why does Portia ask Shylock to be merciful? In MERCHANT OF VENICE.

Portia asks Shylock to be merciful on Antonio because he was claiming for something which would be of no use to him but can take the life of Antonio, and in order to save him from the bond she asks him to show mercy. After which she gives the mercy speech. But Shylock was determined to have the forfeiture of the bond and nothing else..

because she needs to help his husband's friend to be free from the bond. and she also says a speech about it to retreat shylock with that.
