Raisins are dried grapes. When they are placed in water, the water from the surrounding diffuses into the raisins and so the raisins swell up. The phenomenon involved is called osmosis

raisins are dry in nature.As they are dry the water content in the raisins is less.when they are placed in water the concentration of water is more outside than inside.So the raisins swell due to endosmosis(which is a type of osmosis)..
