The soil rich in nitrates and no fertilizers are needed when leguminous plants are grown on it because the roots of  leguminous plants  have bacterium called rizobium which converts atmospheric nitrogen into amonia which is useful nutrient for growth of plant because plants cannot directly use atmospheric nitrogen for their growth.

Bcoz rhizobium bacteria present in the roots of well as many as plants converts the atmospheric nitrogen into a soluble nitrogen compound and thus restores the nitrogen content of the soil.
