In contrast mechanical waves need medium,sound waves,shock waves aremechanical and they need medium to transfer energy or travel. Light doesnot need a medium to travel. Scientists used to believe a medium called ether existed in outer space which lightneeded to propagate.

HEY MATE HERE IS UR ANSWER....
Sound is a mechanical wave and hence require a medium to travel and can't travel through vacuum i.e. It travels by reflecting sound waves. Whereas light is a transverse wave and hence doesn't require a medium to travel.
