Quèstìon :
- Why does temperature remain constant during melting and boiling ?
Answer :
- This phenomenon happens due to Latent heat of fusion and Latent heat of vapourisation.
Explanation for melting :
- When a solid is melted at its melting point , the temperature of the solid remains constant untill the solid is completely melted into liquid , this is due to latent heat of fusion .
What is latent heat of fusion ?
- When a solid is melted , the solid first absorbs all the energy to convert it's state into liquid , and the heat energy is not used to increase its temperature, hence Temperature remains constant and the energy (heat) used to change it's state is called as latent heat of fusion
Explanation for boiling :
- When a liquid is boiled at its boiling point , the temperature of the liquid remains constant untill the liquid is completely boiled into gas , this is due to latent heat of vapourisation.
What is latent heat of vapourisation ?
- When a liquid is melted , the liquid first absorbs all the energy to convert it's state into gas , and the heat energy is not used to increase its temperature, hence Temperature remains constant and the energy (heat) used to change it's state is called as Latent heat of vapourisation
Hence , temperature remains constant during melting and boiling
