For Albert, music was comforting because it offered him an escape from the drudgery of his everyday life. He felt stifled due to the atmosphere at school and the violence was unnerving back at his lodgings. So, apart from books on science, his only comfort was music and he used to play the violin regularly until his landlady asked him to stop. She considered it to be just noise and there was enough of that with the kids constantly howling. Albert was tempted to retort by saying that she was responsible for their howling but he maintained a respectable silence.
