From the pulmonary artery, blood enters to a vast network of fine capillaries of lungs. The capillaries have thin walls, which facilitate exchange of gases between blood and air in the small spaces of lungs. Carbon dioxide leaves the blood to enter lung spaces, while oxygen of the air in lungs, diffuses in to dissolve into blood. This oxygenated blood is now carried by capillaries to pulmonary veins, and towards heart. Heart ultimately pumps this blood to deliver oxygen to all body systems.
