If the weight is pulled to one side and let go, gravity will pull it back towards it's equilibrium position. The momentum built up as the weight falls causes it to overshoot and swing up in the opposite direction

In the extreme positions the bob gains potential energy and as it swings towards its mean position the potential energy gets converted to kinetic energy.
Since there is no stopping force in the mean position, the bob moves ahead and doesnt stop.
