Because of magnetic field inside the conductor

ACTULLY WHEN CURRENT PASSES THROUGH A CONDUCTOR SOME PROPERTIES OF MAGNET COMES IN IT AND IT BEHAVES LIKE A MAGNET.

AND ALSO THE COMPASS NEEDLE IS MAGNET .

SO IT GIVES DEFLECTION
