hey mate ,
here is your answer

His Holiness would have likely been imprisoned, tortured, and/or executed by the Chinese had he remained in Tibet, so he escaped to India in 1959. He now lives in Dharmasala, India (McLeod Ganj to be exact) when not traveling the world in his temple and in the midst of a large colony of other Tibetan refugees.

I had the pleasure of spending two months in McLeod Ganj from October through December of 2014, studying Buddhist philosophy with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama (25 hours over 7 days), at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (25 hours), and with Geshe Lobsang Choegyl Rinpoche (50 hours). I also volunteered at LHA Social Work[1] teaching English to Tibetan refugees, primarily Buddhist monks and nuns.

I had the privilege of being invited to a receiving line, meeting His Holiness on December 8, 2014 at his temple in McLeod Ganj. If interested, you can read the whole story on my blog CombatCritic’s TravelValue

i hope it's helpful to you

Dalai Lamas are important monks of the Gelug school, the newest school of Tibetan Buddhism, which was formally headed by the Ganden Tripas. ... During the 1959 Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama fled to India, where he currently lives as a refugee.
