why does the dough rises/increases in volume

When a dough is kneaded it activated the microbes in it which leads to fermentation . The dough being a rough and porous mass retains the gases evolved in fermentation .
In case of yeast carbon dioxide along with alcohol is released into the dough which makes it to rise .

Fermentation :- it's a biological process and can be defined as the breakdown of a substance( especially simple sugar ) by bacterias ,yeast or other microorganism is called fermentation . The basic end products of this porcess are CO2 and enthanol . Which plays a vital role in rising the dough . I have attached a diagram which will explain the process in a better way .
