The story opens as twelve-year-old Zoe reads the nearly complete novel written by her friend Natalie. There are five chapters left to write. Natalie was inspired to write the novel by her mother, who works in publishing. Natalie had been writing for a long time when her mother, Hannah, told her that publishers were eager to see more “school stories,” novels set in schools with students as characters. Natalie thought that since she spent so much of her time in school, she could probably write a school story pretty easily. Zoe is excited about the novel; she thinks the parts she has read are terrific and cannot wait to read the rest when Natalie writes it.
Natalie is very smart and has been reading and writing at a high level for a long time. Her parents still read to her every night—it was one of her favorite moments each day—until her father died in a car accident, and Natalie began hiding her favorite books because hearing her mother read them without her father made her too sad.
