During the day, the land surface heats up faster than the water surface. Therefore, the air above the land is warmer than the air above the ocean. Now, recall that warmer air is lighter than cooler air. As a result, warm air rises. Therefore, the warmer air over the land surface is rising. As the warm air over the land is rising, the cooler air over the ocean is flowing over the land surface to replace the rising warm air. This is the sea breeze and can be seen at the top of the following image. The bottom of the following image illustrates the land breeze that occurs at night.

Land Breeze

A land breeze is a local wind pattern defined by a late-night movement from land to water. Along the beaches next to major bodies of water, land breezes alternate with sea breezes.

Explanation:

  • The thermodynamic effects of air masses with varying temperatures, moisture, and pressure determine the weather.
  • It's as easy as that: the greater the difference, the stronger the weather.
  • The sun's heat is absorbed differently by the sea and the land along a shoreline.
  • The water is warmer than the land at night, and the air rises above it. As a result, the pressure drops and air from the land rushes in, resulting in an offshore wind.
  • During the day, it's the polar opposite, with an onshore breeze.
