A special kind of mercury-in-glassthermometer, called a maximumthermometer, works by having a constriction in the neck close to the bulb. As the temperature rises, themercury is pushed up through the constriction by the force of expansion

mercury is only one in liquid state in room temperature .It's use in thermometer in solid state bcz it has higher coefficient of expansion.
