The mirror appears to be a lake as it is silver like a placid clear lake. It gives the illusion of having depth like a lake. The aspect of the mirror being referred to here is its depth. Mirror like a lake has many secrets and memories of people who look at it hidden in its depth.

The poetess Sylvia Plath attributes the quality of a lake to the mirror because lake also reflects the image of a person as it is without any bias. The comparison of a mirror with a lake, 'Now, I am a lake', lends depth to the mirror as the woman who has been looking at the mirror ever since she had been young looks for her lost beauty in the mirror. The mirror, on the other hand, feels she has drowned a young girl in it and now, when she looks at herself, she finds the signs of aging very disturbing.
