the poet describes old woman as a terrible fish because as a fish starves for life when taken out from water the old woman finds her youth in the mirror and on not finding her youth she is not able to adjust in her oldage and starves for life like a fish.THAT IS WHY WOMEN IS DESCRIBED AS A TERRIBLE FISH.^_^

It is not the mirror who is described as the terrible fish. It is the old lady who is described as terrible fish as when she sees herself in mirror she couldn't reconcile or believe that now she is robbed of all her youth and beauty. She agitates herself and acts like a fish who has been taken out from pound who instead of looking beautiful looks terrible and ugly.

Hope this helps you
