Nearly every four years, we add an extra day to the calendar in the form of February 29, also known as Leap Day. Put simply, these additional 24 hours are built into the calendar to ensure that it stays in line with the Earth's movement around the Sun.

The rule for the leap year is:
Most years that can be divided evenly by 4 are leap years except century years. Century years are leap years only if they can be evenly divided by 400
A complete revolution for the earth around the sun takes about 365.2425 days.
If we consider a year to be of 365 days then after every 4 years we will be lagging by 0.2425*4=0.97days. This can be adjusted by adding one extra day every 4 years. With this correction, after a 4 years span, we will be lagging by 365.2425*4-(365*3+366)=-0.03day. A negative sign indicates leading not lagging. Let’s call this correction-1.
